Nominees for 2011 VIWG Secretary

Person elected Secretary in 2011 will automatically become Vice Chair in 2012 and Chair in 2013
NOTE: as per the VIWG Charter, the person selected this year should be a planetary volcanologist. Elections in 2012 will focus on a geophysicist, and in 2013 on a field-oriented glaciovolcanologist.

Two nominees are standing for the position of Secretary for the Volcano-Ice Interactions Working Group: Laszlo Kestay and Tracy Gregg. Information on each candidate is posted below. The duties of Secretary include communicating information about commission activities with the membership. Dr. Laszlo Kestay, Astrogeology Science Center, Flagstaff, AZ

Dr. Laszlo Kestay is the acting Center Director for the Astrogeology Science Center, Flagstaff, AZ


Dr. Laszlo ('Laz') Kestay is the acting Center Director for the Astrogeology Science Center in Flagstaff, AZ. Laz focuses on flood lavas on Earth and the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter's moon Io and their interaction with volatiles. He received his BS in Mathematics and Geological Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin, and his MS and PhD in Planetary Science and Geology from the California Institute of Technology. He joined the USGS Astrogeology in 2003, was an NSF Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and USGS Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory (1994-1996), and a Research Associate at the University of Arizona and University of Hawaii at Manoa (1996-2003). He was also a guest investigator at the USGS Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory between 1991-1999, specializing in collecting in situ field data on the dynamics and cooling of basaltic lava flows.

Laz was a member of the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera team onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter that launched in 2005, the High Resolution Stereo Color Imager (HiSCI) onboard the Mars Trace Gas Orbiter to be launched in 2016, and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera onboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter launched to the Moon in 2009. He also participated in the Galileo Mission to Jupiter and the Mars Exploration Rovers. His field studies on Earth have included work in India, Namibia, Chile, Iceland, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii.

Dr Tracy Gregg, University of Buffalo,

Tracy Gregg (above with FLIR) is an Associate Professor of Geology at the University of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, USA.


Lava flows intrigue me, and I’m not particular about where they are or their composition. I have studied the physical volcanology of effusive eruptions at the bottom of the ocean at mid-ocean ridges, for example, to help me better understand how lava flows on Venus might behave. I actively investigate how different environmental parameters (such as glacial ice or seawater) affect the physics of volcanic eruptions on Earth and around the Solar System; my tools are laboratory simulations, computer models and fieldwork.

I am currently an Associate Professor at the University at Buffalo in New York, and have been here since 1998. I have supervised tens of graduate students as well as a handful of undergraduate students during that time. I will therefore bring the organizational skills required to balance research, teaching, service—and, in my case, a family life—to the IAVCEI Volcano-Ice Commission.

Volcano-Ice interactions have clearly played a vital role in shaping volcanic landscapes on Earth; it’s probable that they were significant in creating Mars’ landscape as well. We must continue to educate both the scientific and global communities about the potential hazards and climate impacts associated with volcano-ice interactions. This education and outreach to our colleagues, granting agencies and the public is best accomplished through continued national and international collaboration between scientists from different disciplines, as well a presentation, publication and outreach at national and international conferences and workshops. I will work to organize and foster these efforts as secretary of the Volcano-Ice Interaction Commission.
